If you are a wheelchair user and wheeling yourself around is starting to be more difficult, for whatever reason, you don't want to give up your freedom and mobility. One way to keep that freedom and mobility and not need to have someone help you wheel you around is to use an electric wheelchair. With a chair like that, you can still get around and maintain your freedom. Once you get your electric wheelchair, then you are going to want to know a few maintenance tips so that your chair stays in good shape. 

Charge New Batteries

Any time that you get a new battery for your wheelchair, you want to make sure that batteries are fully and completely charged. The batteries you get with your wheelchair are different from rechargeable batteries that you get from the store. Your chair's batteries are deep-cycle batteries, so the first charges help to set how fully the battery will be able to charge in later charges. So, if you fully charge the batteries when you get them or make sure that they were fully charged, and then are careful with usage for the next few days, you should be able to take advantage of the full power your battery can give you for some time. Make sure that you plug them in nightly as well, because that can help keep your batteries happy and give them a longer life. 

Check Your Tires

You want to make sure that you check your tires pretty regularly. Usually, once a month is a good time period. There are a few things that you are looking for. One thing you are looking for is for loosened connectors. Look at the various nuts and bolts that hold your wheels on. If they are loose, make sure that you get them nice and tight again. The nuts and bolts will loosen up a bit, just as part of your normal usage, so tightening them up will make sure that you can keep going as long as you want to. You are also looking for any overly worn spots. Those spots could cause you to have a blowout or flat tire when you are far from home.
